What's inside

• One 24oz glass starter jar with an aluminum lid, a cloth cover, a feeding-day tracker band and a thermometer strip
• Two cotton-rope proofing baskets (one round, one oval), also called bannetons, with cloth liners
• One magnetic bread lame for scoring dough
• One spatula

This is a tool kit. Live sourdough starter, flour and other ingredients are not included. You will also need a kitchen scale, mixing bowl, a suitable oven and baking equipment.

Who it's for

For a beginner gathering starter and proofing tools, or a home baker who needs a jar and two baskets. You can begin making a starter in a suitable jar you already own while your kit travels to you.

Care and handling

Read the care instructions supplied with your kit before first use. Keep proofing baskets dry between uses and remove loose flour after the dough residue dries. Follow the supplied instructions for any washing; avoid soaking the baskets. Store all pieces clean and dry.

Proofing baskets support dough before baking. Do not put them in the oven. The lame has a sharp blade: handle it carefully, keep fingers clear of the edge and store it out of children's reach. Do not assume the jar or tools are heat-safe or dishwasher-safe unless the included instructions say so.

Questions before you start

Does it include a living starter?
No. The jar is for making or keeping your own starter. The kit contains the tools listed above.

Will I bake my first loaf in seven days?
There is no fixed deadline. A new starter often needs 5-14 days to develop and may take longer. Temperature, flour and feeding affect the pace. Follow signs of readiness before mixing your loaf.

Are these baskets baking pans?
No. They hold shaped dough while it proofs. Transfer the dough to suitable baking equipment before it goes in the oven.

When will my kit arrive?
